Sonny was born in Giessen, Germany in a Polish family. In 1999 he left his native team of Giessen for Eintracht. There he passed through several junior clubs whereat he gained the German U-17 championship title in 2010 and together with his club reached the final of the Cup versus Bayer 04, where his team lost the game with the 0-1 score.
In the season 2010/2011 he signed a professional contract valid till 2014. His debut at a senior level occurred when he was 17. On August 13, 2010 he was substituted in the DFB Pokal match versus SV Wilhelmshaven. And on August 28, 2010 he got his first Bundesliga appearance against Hamburger SV where his team lost one score to three. Sonny made a substitute appearance on the 84th minute of the match.
In all he had 8 appearances during his first season and twice featured in the starting line-up. On April 19 Kittel suffered cruciate ligament disruption and therefore he had to have a forced half-a-season rest.
His return happened on February 5, 2012 in the game against Eintracht Braunschweig. Apart from the matches for the first squad Kittel was nine times fielded for the junior team where he scored 4.
Kittel is also one of the main hopes of the Germany national youth football team. He has 12 appearances for the U-17 international team and has already been capped four times for the U-18 squad.
