Steed Malbranque is a French footballer of Belgian descent currently playing as a midfielder for Olympique Lyonnais. He was born on 6 January 1980 in Mouscron, Belgium.
Steed was formed in the youth systems of US Oyonnax, Montpellier and Lyon. In 1997, he signed his first professional contract with the latter club. During a four-year spell at Lyon, Malbranque made a total of 96 team appearances including 12 matches and 2 goals in the Champions League and 7 games in the UEFA Cup. His strong performances in the UEFA competitions sparked interest of several Premier League clubs such as Arsenal, but Malbranque eventually switched to Fulham. He impressed the club’s management and fans scoring 10 goals in 46 matches already during the debut 2001/02 season. Overall, Malbranque scored a total of 44 goals in 211 appearances for Fulham in a five-year spell.
In 2006, the Frenchman joined Tottenham Hotspur and helped them to win the Football League Cup in the 2007/08 season. In between 2008 and 2011, Malbranque played for Sunderland amassing 102 appearances for the period. In the summer 2011, the midfielder returned to France where he joined Saint-Étienne. In August 2012, Malbranque resigned for Lyon and plays for the club today.
