Stefan de Vrij is a back, born on 5 February 1992 in Ouderkerk aan den Ijssel, Netherlands.
The footballer is the youngest son of Jan de Vrij, who performed for local VV Spirit, where Stefan’s career took off. The back played for the club during five seasons before he took part in a trial at Feyenoord’s ground at the age of ten. After several days of tests and a demonstration game, de Vrij was offered to join the academy of Rotterdam side team.
Stefan performed at the position of a midfielder in VV Spirit, but the coaching staff of the new club decided to put him at the position of a back, which perfectly fitted his skills. The young player developed really quickly and was the only one among his teammates, who skipped the U-16 level and instantly jumped to the U-17 level.
In July 2009, de Vrij penned his first senior contract with the club till July 2012. The footballer’s main team début came on 28 September 2009, when he came on as a substitute for Kelvin Leerdam in the 58th minute of the KNVB Cup match against Harkemase Boys. In December the same year, Stefan made his first Eredivisie appearance in the 3-1 victory over F.C. Groningen. During a five-year spell with Feyenoord de Vrij turned into a rock at centre-back. In the summer 2014 he moved to Lazio.
The back took part in the 2009 European U-17 Championship hosted by Germany. The Netherlands national team, which welcomed seven strongest Feyenoord players in its fold, strolled to silver medals, having lost to Germany in the final.
Since 2012 de Vrij has played for the senior team and reached the bronze medals at 2014 World Cup.
