In 1998, London side West Ham secured Bywater’s services on permanent basis, but did not manage to provide him with a place in the starting line-up, which entailed the keeper’s temporary move to Wycombe Wanderers. In 2008, the goalie was loaned out to Ipswich Town, where he featured in 17 games during six months. After the end of his spell, Stephen returned to his parent club and eventually became the pivot, who made 151 appearances for Derby County during four years and a half.
In the summer 2011, the footballer sealed a temporary deal with Sheffield Wednesday and showed stellar performance in 12 matches during his spell, which saw him sign a long-term contract with the team in January 2012. Bywater took part in another 20 fixtures for ‘The Owls’ before joining Millwall in June 2013.
From 2001 till 2003, the keeper was capped six times for the England national U-21 squad.
