Steven Cherundolo was born on 19 February 1979 in Rockford, Illinois, the USA. He currently plays as a defender for the German Hannover 96 and for the United States men’s national soccer team. He is also renowned for his receiving three call-ups for the 2002, 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups, though he appeared only in the last two of them.
Cherundolo’s senior career started with Hannover 96 in 1999. The next season, he picked up a knee injury which deprived him of the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympic Games participation and kept in the shade for the remainder of the 1999/2000 2.Bundesliga.
In the 2000/01 season, Steve cemented his position as a right back and appeared in 30 games for the club, thus helping the Reds to promote to the 1.Bundesliga. After Hannover’s breaking into the German elite, American footballer built up an unassailable lead in the first team and even became its vice-captain. In 2007, he extended his contract with the Reds and received a captain’s armband shortly thereafter.
A regular American international, Steve Cherundolo debuted for the United States national team in 1999. In 2005, he featured for the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He scored his maiden opening goal in 4-1 defeat to Germany in March 2006. Cherundolo was called up twice for the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups, missing the 2002 FIFA World Cup because of injury. During the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he performed as a first-choice right back, helping his team to break into the round of 16.
