Steve von Bergen is a Swiss footballer who currently provides a defensive cover for Italian top club Palermo. He was born on 10 June 1983 in Neuchâtel, Switzerland.
Steve began his football grooming at FC Hauterive youth academy in 1991 where he played for five years. From 1996 till 2000, he was a part of Neuchâtel Xamax youth system, until eventually broke into the first team of the club. During his five-year senior spell at Neuchâtel Xamax von Bergen made a total of 126 appearances for a Swiss club.
A promising footballer spent the 2005-2007 seasons at a top-flight side FC Zürich winning the Swiss Super League trophy with the club. Von Bergen cemented his place as a centre back in the starting XI and shone in 68 matches for the team.
In the summer 2007, Swiss defender moved to Germany to join a superb Bundesliga club Hertha BSC. He got a first taste of the Bundeliga action in a match against Arminia Bielefeld. Overall, von Bergen featured for 68 games with the German side for three years.
In June 2010, Steve joined Italian Cesena on a free transfer and in 2012 he played for two months for Genoa. In the summer 2012, von Bergen was signed by Serie A club Palermo.
In the 2003/2004 campaign, Steve von Bergen made 25 appearances for the Swiss U-21 squad. He played his first game against Costa Rica for the Switzerland national team on 6 September 2006.
