Steven Defour plays as a midfielder for Porto. He was born on 15 April 1988 in Mechelen, Belgium.
In 2002 Steven join the academy of the football club Mechelen. During the two-year spell he became one of the best products of the academy and finally prepared to start his professional career.
In 2004 Defour was invited to a try-out to Racing Genk where he took part in a friendly with the reserve team. After successful performance in the exhibition match he was offered to sign a contract and join the main team. In the summer 2004 Defour sealed a long-term deal with Racing Genk. The footballer featured in 30 games for the first professional club in his career during three years however he failed to become the key player.
In 2006 Steven was invited to move to Standard Liège which also plays in the Jupiler League. In the summer 2006 he penned a contract with this club where he spent long five years. During this period Defour was used both as a member of the starting eleven and as a substitute because he didn’t enjoy decent form all the time. Nevertheless he took part in 125 matches kicking 13 goals for five years with Standard Liège.
In 2011 the footballer caught the eye of the Portuguese outfit Porto which made an advantageous offer both to the player and to Standard Liège which owned Defour’s sporting rights. Steven moved to Porto for a fee of €6 million and signed a five-year contract with this club. He got down to work immediately becoming a regular in midfield. In the 2011/2012 season the Belgian footballer made more than 30 appearances for Porto where he plays successfully until now (as on May 2012).
Since 2006 Steven Defour has been capped more than 30 times for the Belgium national football team and has netted once.
