Stiliyan Petrov is a retired midfielder. He was born on 5 July 1979 in Montana, Bulgaria.
Petrov’s youth career ran in various academies of the country, but the end of his junior experience fell on the youth system of Montana, where he spent some time before coming on the pitch as a professional footballer.
In 1996 Stiliyan penned a senior contract with CSKA Sofia. Performing for one of the best Bulgarian clubs, Petrov gained priceless experience due to making starts and sub appearances. The footballer was lucky to feature in 43 games and find the net six times, which was a crowning achievement for the rookie.
In 1999 the Bulgarian footballer accepted an invitation of Scottish side Celtic, which offered Stiliyan a very lucrative contract. The midfielder became one of the candidates for becoming a regular, but only if he kept fit and his form was at the optimal level. From 1999 till 2006, Petrov performed for ‘The Hoops’ and clinched a place in the starting line-up for almost every game. Stiliyan amassed 55 goals in 228 matches for the club, which made him one of the most efficient midfielders in the history of the squad.
In 2006 English side Aston Villa failed to pass by the Bulgarian talent and made a tempting contract offer to him. The footballer did not become an anchor midfielder at once and managed to do that only after the head coach made sure Petrov corresponded to certain standards. Without any doubts, Stiliyan faced both competition and regress of his fitness during his spell in the club, but he managed to overcome those difficulties in short term and got back to play as soon as that was possible.
In 2013 the Bulgarian retired from football following his fight against leukaemia.
From 1998, the footballer was capped 106 times and contributed eight goals for the Bulgaria national team.
