Sun Xiang was born on 15 January 1982 in Shanghai, China. When Xiang was thirteen, he joined the academy of Shanghai Cable 02 together with his twin brother. From 2001 he played for different youth squads of the club before Shanghai Cable 02 was taken over by Shanghai Shenhua.
In 2002 twin brothers Sun Xiang and Sun Ji started their professional careers in Shanghai Shenhua. Soon both of them secured a place in the first team. In the next season Xiang became one of the most important players of the club. The footballer was making progress, and soon he caught the eye of Dutch team PSV Eindhoven.
In 2007 Sun Xiang joined PSV Eindhoven on a loan contract with an option to complete a long-term deal in the future. It was an excellent opportunity for the football player to continue his career at a higher level. Xiang showed a good performance in the debut match for the club on 17 February 2007. He became the first Chinese footballer to play in the Eredivisie.
However when the loan contract expired, the club decided not to seal a long-term deal with the footballer. In July 2008 Sun Xiang was farmed out to Austrian side Austria Wien for a year. Just like in the Netherlands, Xiang became the first Chinese footballer to play in the Austrian Bundesliga. Sun made 19 appearances for the club and netted twice. After his loan period ended, the footballer returned to Shanghai Shenhua where he played until 2010. Xiang took part in 125 games overall and kicked 11 goals for this club.
In April 2010 Sun Xiang rejected the offer of Australian outfit Sydney and penned a long-term agreement with Guangzhou Evergrande. Sun made his debut for this Chinese team in July. In 2010 the footballer won the China League One title together with his club. In the course of time Xiang became one of the key players of the team. In 2011 Sun won the Chinese Super League title together with his club.
From 2000 Sun Xiang was called up to the China U-20 and U-23 national teams. Since 2002 he has been capped for the senior side. The footballer took part in more than 60 international matches and scored 5 goals.
