Takashi Usami was born on 6 May 1992 in Nagaokakyō, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan.
When Usami was six, he took up football playing for his local club Nagaokakyō SC. There he performed until 2004, however didn’t appear on the football field for half a year. In 2005 the player was picked up by Gamba Osaka, where he started performing at U-15 level. Later Usami was transferred to U-17 club, where he was to stay for a very short time. On 20 May 2009, Takashi finally made his way to the first team, he entered club history breaking all the records by making his first professional appearances for Gamba Osaka being 17 years and 14 days old and scoring one goal just in the same match. Usami was the youngest footballer to achieve great feats for his club. Takashi made his professional debut and a goal in the match against FC Seoul in the Champions League. In 2010, he became an important player in the Gamba Osaka squad and, on December 6, he was declared by the J-League as the Best Young Player at the annual awards ceremony.
In June 2011, it was settled that Takashi would be loaned to Bayern Munich club. He moved to the club in mid-July. Usami made five appearances, among them were: DFB Cup, Champions League, and Bundesliga. The footballer, however, passed away his time playing for Bayern reserves scoring impressive six goals. He then returned to Gamba Osaka. Soon after that Hoffenheim assured a one-year loan of the player eager to give the Japanese U-22 international player another chance in the Bundesliga.
As for the national level, Usami played for U-17 (11 appearances and 4 goals), and for U-20 (three goals in three matches), for the latter he made his debut in 2010.
