Taras Stepanenko is a defensive midfielder for Shakhtar Donetsk and the national team of Ukraine. He was born in a small town of Velyka Novosilka, Ukraine.
Taras is a product of Torpedo Zaporizhia football school, which he joined in 2001. After 5 years of playing for the club’s youth teams Taras signed a professional contract with Metalurh Zporizhya where he initially played for the reserves. On 4 March 2007 Stepanenko debuted in the Ukrainian Premier League, in an away match against Dynamo Kyiv.
From 2007 to 2010 Stepanenko played a total of 81 games and scored one goal for the first team of Metalurh. On 11 May 2010 the midfielder moved to Shakhtar Donetsk along with his teammate Serhiy Kryvtsov. Both players have signed five-year contracts with the Miners. During the first two seasons at Shakhtar Taras made only 24 appearances in the Ukrainian Premier League and several in the Ukrainian Cup. Still, he became two-time champion of Ukraine and the holder of the Ukrainian Cup.
Stepanenko has vast experience in playing for the Ukraine U-21 team. From 2007 to 2010 he won 22 caps and scored one goal for the Yellow-Blues. Since 2010 he is occasionally called up to the senior side of Ukraine.
