Theofanis Gekas was born in 1980 in Larissa, Greece, and began his football career at Athlitiki Enosi Larissa 1964, where he spent there three seasons. After that he switched to Kallithea FC in 2001 and helped his new team to get promotion to the Greek top division. In the winter of 2005, Gekas joined Panathinaikos and became the top goal scorer in the league in 2005. The 2006/07 season he spent on loan in the German club of the 2. Fußball-BundesligaVfL Bochum. That season was prolific for the footballer and he was very popular among the fans.
In 2007, Gekas moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen. There he appeared mostly as a substitute until his teammate Dmitri Bulykin was injured and then Gekas got a place in the starting XI. In the mid of the 2008/09 season he was loaned to Portsmouth, in summer he returned to Bayer Leverkusen and in December 2009 Gekas was sent on loan to Hertha BSC.
From 2010 to 2012 the Greek footballer stayed at Eintracht Frankfurt until January 2012, when he moved to Turkey and joined Samsunspor for half a season. In August 2012, he transferred to La Liga side Levante UD.
In 2013 the Greek forward joined a Turkish side Akhisar Belediyespor.
In the season he played on loan with Konyaspor.
He was also successful with the national team with 76 caps and 24 goals.
