Valter Birsa is a Slovenian winger of AC Milan. He was born on August 7, 1986 in Šempeter pri Gorici, Yugoslavia.
Valter launched his academy scholarship with Bilje in 1991. In 2003 he made the move to Primorje where he featured once during the 2003/2004 campaign. A year later Valter was transferred to another Slovenian club. This time it was Gorica. The two excellent seasons with the club saw him make 61 appearances and bag 26 goals. A move abroad looked inevitable and in the summer of 2006 Sochaux reached an agreement with Gorica. He immediately broke into the main set-up in the 2006/2007 season. During his time with the French club Birsa registered 68 appearances and scored 11 goals. In January 2009 the left winger joined Auxerre on a six-month loan. His outstanding display in the club’s shirt made Auxerre’s administrators sign the player on a permanent basis. During the two-year stint at Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamps Birsa was a consistent performer, netting 8 goals in 68 outings.
In February 2011 Genoa secured his signature. Birsa clinched a four-year deal with the Grifone but due to high competition he had to struggle for a regular place in the first team. So the Slovenian international appeared only 9 times before being subsequently loaned to Torino on August 31, 2012.
In the summer 2013 Birsa signed a contract with AC Milan. In the season 2014/2015 Birsa played on loan with Chievo Verona.
From 2004 to 2006 Birsa represented the Slovenia U-21 team. He was on target five times in 8 appearances. Since 2005 he has competed for the senior team, clocking up over 50 outings.
