Egyptian professional defender Wael Gomaa was born on 3 August 1975 in Gharbia Governorate, Egypt. The product of Ghazl El-Mahalla youth system, he was promoted to the first team of the club in 1993 and played there for eight years. His strong performances at Ghazl throughout that period sparked interest of top Egyptian clubs. In the early 2000s, Egyptian heavyweights Al-Ahly set sights upon Gomaa and eventually signed him in 2001.
Wael Gomaa made his debut in an Al-Ahly jersey in a friendly symbolic match against Spanish giants Real Madrid in August 2001. Since that time he cemented his regular place in the starting lineup and made a total of 232 solid appearances for Al-Ahly as of January 2013. Gomaa sparked furor during the CAF Champions League final match against Cotonsport Garoua in November 2008 as he scored an opening goal four minutes into the match ad led the team to the CAF Champions League trophy. Overall Wael collected five CAF Champions League victories, seven Premier League titles, three Egyptian Cups and five Egyptian Super Cups during his spell at the club.
Wael Gomaa is a regular international for Egypt since 2001. As of February 2012, he earned 107 caps to the national team. He was a part of the team that won three African Cup of Nations titles.
