Walter Samuel is a center back, born on 23 March 1978 in Laborde, Argentina.
Walter’s professional career started at the age of 18 when he signed his first professional contract. During the 1996/97 season Walter was a key player at Newell’s Old Boys. The head coach put the young defender in the starting lineup regularly. Walter’s reliable play satisfied the home club and attracted attention of the best clubs in Latin America.
In 1997 Samuel was happy to sign for Boca Juniors, one of the best clubs in Argentina, only a year after the start of his professional career. Walter signed a 3-year contract with the club and during that time was a frequent in the starting lineup scoring 4 goals in 75 appearances.
In 2000 Italian A.S. Roma purchased Walter Samuel for about €20 million. It was one of the most costly transfers in Argentinian football at the time. The young Argentinian center back played with Roma first team for 4 years and was the club’s best defender with the total of 122 games and 9 goals.
In 2004 Real Madrid badly needed a reliable defender and thus paid attention to the Argentinian who by that time had already earned the nickname ‘The Wall’ due to his strong style of play. Real Madrid acquired Walter for €16 million and signed him for 4 years. After one season with Los Blancos and a total of 2 goals in 30 appearances Samuel left the club.
In 2005 Walter signed for Internazionale and spent nine years with the Nerazzurri. During this spell, Samuel made 236 appearances for the club, won five Serie A titles, three Italian Cups and the Champions League.
In the summer 2014 the 36-year old defender moved to Basel.
In 2010 Walter Samuel was named Serie A Defender of the Year. From 1999 to 2010 he was capped 56 times and netted 5 goals for the Argentina national team.
