Wayne Neville Anthony Routledge was born on 7 January 1985 in London, England. He is a product of the Crystal Palace academy, where the footballer trained and performed for the youth team at early age.
In 2001 Routledge penned a professional contract with the club for five years and showed encouraging performance by netting 11 goals in 110 games.
In 2005 Wayne continued his career in Tottenham Hotspur. He was almost immediately sent on loan first to Portsmouth, then to Fulham, where the footballer made 24 appearances during 2006/2007.
In 2008 Aston Villa bought the player and penned him on a one-and-a-half-year deal. He made his début for the main team in April 2008. However, the management soon decided to send Wayne on loan to Cardiff City, where he spent the rest of the season and fired two goals in nine matches.
After the end of his loan spell, Routledge transferred to Queens Park Rangers on a four-and-a-half-year deal in 2009 and kicked three goals in 44 games during his first season in the new team.
However, after the end of the season, Wayne rescinded his contract with QPR and continued his career in Newcastle United, penning a three-and-a-half-year contract with ‘The Magpies’. The footballer’s start in the new club was really successful as he made his first appearances for the main team soon after signing and found the net for the first time several days later. Routledge had imperious form and clinched a right midfielder place in the starting XI. He made 31 appearances for the club and went on to net three times, but failed to compete with more experienced players and lost his place in the main team, sitting on the substitutes’ bench. In January 2011, Wayne completed a six-month loan deal with Queens Park Rangers, where he took part in 19 matches and banged in five goals till the end of the season.
In 2011 Routledge moved to Swansea City and continues to perform for the club up till now. Wayne was capped 12 times and contributed one goal for the England national U-21 team.
