Wu Lei was born in 1991 and between 2003 and 2005 he was at Genbao Football Base. In 2006 he joined Shanghai East Asia and on 2 September 2006 he made his league debut in a 3-5 loss against Yunnan Lijiang Dongba. In hat day he was 14 years and 287 days old, thus made a record being the youngest player in the professional league in China.
In 2007 he helped the side to advance to the second division, China League One. In August 2008 he was named the second youngest Chinese football league goal scorer, being 16 years and 289 days.
Since 2007 he’s been called up to play for the China U17 team, then for U20, with whom he played in the 2010 AFC U-19 Championship qualification. During the qualification he netted nine goals in five games. His senior national team debut was in a 2-0 win over Hong Kong in the 2010 East Asian Football Championship.
