Yakubu Aiyegbeni, or simply Yakubu, is a Nigerian forward, born on 22 November 1982 in Benin City, Nigeria.
Yakubu embarked on his professional career at Bridge Boys in 1997. Since 1998 till 2003, he played for Israeli teams Maccabi Haifa and Hapoel Kfar Saba. In 2003, the Yak, as Yakubu is often nicknamed among fans and teammates, was noticed by the English First Division side Portsmouth. He moved to the club on loan from Maccabi Haifa in 2003 and was offered a permanent contract shortly after. Yakubu became an instrumental figure for Portsmouth as he helped the side to win the 2002/03 First Division and break into the top tier. The next two seasons, Yakubu cut a brilliant figure scoring 29 goals in 67 Premier League appearances.
In 2005, the skillful player moved to Middlesbrough amassing 35 goals in 103 appearances in all competitions for the club for two and a half seasons. In the summer 2007, the Yak signed for Everton for an outstanding fee of £11.25 million. He got off to a flying start at Everton marking his debut against Bolton Wanderers with a splendid goal 11 minutes into the match. In December 2007, Yakubu scored his maiden hat-trick in a fantastic 3-0 win over Fulham. The hat-trick was then jokingly called ‘yak’-trick.
In the 2011/12 season, Yakubu played for Blackburn Rovers amassing 17 goals in 30 league matches. In 2012, he moved to China and joined Guangzhou R&F in the Chinese Super League.
In January 2014 Yakubu moved to a Qatari side Al-Rayyan.
Yakubu is a regular international for the Nigeria national team since 2000. He is currently the third top scorer for Nigeria with 21 goals in 57 matches (as of January 2014).
