Youssef El Akchaoui is a back. He was born on 18 February 1981 in Dordrecht, Netherlands. However, the footballer has Moroccan citizenship and performs for the Morocco national team.
Youssef’s career took off in the youth team of Rotterdam side Excelsior, from where he soon moved to German side Union Berlin. The back’s professional début came on 15 November 2002 in the home match against Frankfurt side Eintracht. El Akchaoui made eleven appearances for the club during one season.
In 2003 Youssef returned to the Netherlands and joined the main team of ADO Den Haag. The footballer stayed at the substitutes’ bench throughout the first season and made his first appearance only on 15 August 2004 in the Eerste Divisie away 1-0 loss to ‘s-Hertogenbosch side Den Bosch. Two months later, on 24 October, the player went on to the net of De Graafschap, which was his first goal and the winner in a 2-1 victory. El Akchaoui featured in 83 matches and kicked two goals for the club during his spell at ADO Den Haag.
In the summer 2006, Youssef penned a three-year contract with NEC, where he showed stellar performance by netting the winner in the game versus Vitesse. In August 2008, the management of the club extended his contract and the back succeeded Peter Wisgerhof to the position of a captain. However, in the following season El Akchaoui gave his captain’s armband to Gábor Babos and went on a six-month loan to German side FC Augsburg.
After his contract expired, Youssef sealed a deal with Heerenveen till 30 June 2013 and continued to perform for the club at the position of a left back. His first appearance for the team came on 21 August 2010 in the home match against NAC Breda. El Akchaoui took part in 16 fixtures for Heerenveen, but did not manage to find the net (as of October 2012).
