Yuri de Souza Fonseca was born in Maceió, Brazil in 1982. He has dual citizenship: Portuguese and Brazilian. He spent the major part of his playing career in Portugal.
He began to play football at Marialvas and in 2000 joined FC Maia. During his first season in Maia he made 19 appearances and scored 8 goals and in the second season he netted 14 goals in 29 league games.
In 2003 Yuri joined Boavista and made his debut in January 2003 in a 0-1 loss at FC Porto. In the following season he was sent on loan to Gil Vicente, where he made 15 appearances and scored 4 goals, and then he was sent to Estoril. In the spring of 2006 Yuri was announced to join Pontevedra CF. In 2007/08 he was loaned to Las Palmas and then returned to Pontevedra, where he stayed till his move to SD Ponferradina in 2009.
