Zelão was born on November 12, 1984 in Pirajuí, Brazil. He currently plays as a defender for FC Astana.
When a boy Zelão played street football and was noticed by the social workers, who got the boy to his first football school. Later Zelão signed his first professional contract with Matonense in 2003. In between 2004 and 2007, Zelão played for such Brazilian squads as Palmeiras B, Noroeste, Bragantino and Corinthians and in 2008 moved to Russia to join FC Saturn Ramenskoye. Overall, the footballer appeared in 75 games for Saturn for two seasons.
On January 31, 2011 Zelão signed a three-year contract with FC Kuban Krasnodar and on March 13, 2011 he made his Russian Premier League debut against Rubin Kazan where he came as a starter and spent the whole 90 minutes on the field.
In 2013 the contract was terminated and the Brazilian joined a Kazakh club Astana.
