Zheng Zhi was born on 20 August 1980 in Shenyang, China. Zhi started to play football at the junior academy of Liaoning Whowin. From 1999 he played for the Liaoning Youth team. However the club’s activity was suspended because of financial troubles and Zheng didn’t play professional football for a whole year.
In 2001 the player started his senior career signing a three-year contract with Shenzhen Jianlibao. Zheng was used as a playmaker and kicked 14 goals in 77 matches for this team. In 2005 Zhi moved to Shandong Luneng where he made 44 appearances overall and scored 31 goals.
In December 2006 the footballer was loaned to English side Charlton Athletic. Zheng made his debut in March 2007. In August 2007 Charlton Athletic purchased the player and penned a two-year agreement with him. In March 2008 Zheng Zhi was voted one of five best players of the English Premier League.
In the summer 2008 the club was in negotiations with West Bromwich Albion about the player’s transfer, however it didn’t take place. In July 2009 Zhi left the team despite the fact that he was offered to prolong the contract. In September 2009 the footballer sealed a two-year agreement with Scottish side Celtic. Zhi netted once in 16 games for this club.
In June 2010 Zheng Zhi returned to China and signed for Guangzhou Evergrande which played in the Chinese Super League. The footballer made his debut in July 2010. A bit later Zhi scored his first goal for his new team. When the club’s captain Li Zhihai left Guangzhou Evergrande in 2011, Zheng Zhi was chosen the new captain.
Zheng Zhi played for the China U-23 national team. Since 2002 he has been capped for the senior side. Zhi was used as a defender, midfielder and playmaker. The footballer took part in more than 60 international matches and netted 13 goals. In 2008 Zheng Zhi captained the China national football team at the Summer Olympics.
