Zoltán Gera is a midfielder, born on 22 April 1979 in Pécs, Hungary.
Gera was groomed in several Hungarian academies, but his last three years of youth career fell on the Pécsi Bőrgyár youth system, where the footballer prepared for the professional performance.
In 1996 Zoltán drew the attention of Harkány SE, which was ready to sign a senior contract with the midfielder. That was a brilliant opportunity for Gera and he wanted to take that opportunity as soon as possible. The same year the footballer’s professional career took off and he spent a year in his first club. In 1997 Zoltán transferred to Pécsi Mecsek and showed a steady performance by scoring 19 goals in 87 matches during three years, which substantially raised his transfer cost.
In 2000 the footballer ended his Pécsi Mecsek spell by Ferencváros move and performed for the new club during four years. The head coach decided to include the midfielder in the starting XI in his début season and Gera made cinematic display by netting a lot of goals and showing secure play, which consolidated him at the position and did a lot of good in terms of professionalism. Zoltán made 123 appearances and amassed 34 goals for Ferencváros during his spell in the club.
In 2004 the footballer moved to English side West Bromwich for £1.5 million and signed a three-year contract, but later the contract was extended for another year. During that time, Gera took part in 138 matches and kicked 21 goals, becoming an unchallenged king of the team’s midfield. In 2008 English side Fulham decided to secure the services of the Hungarian player and completed a deal with Zoltán, who made 86 appearances and found the net five times during three years in the club.
In the summer 2011, the footballer returned to West Bromwich, but he was mainly used as a substitute in the 2011/2012 season. In the summer 2014 Gera was released from the squad.
From 1999 till 2000, Zoltán took part in three games of the Hungary national U-21 team. From 2002, he was capped 73 times and contributed 21 goals for the senior national squad.
