Chinese Super League is the highest division of professional football in China. The league was created in 2004, replacing the former Chinese Football Association Jia-A League. The title of the league is contested by 16 teams.
Overall six teams claimed the title since the league was founded: Shenzhen Jianlibao,Beijing Guoan, Shandong Luneng,Dalian Shide,Guangzhou Evergrande and Changchun Yatai. The most titled team is Shandong Luneng with 3 trophies.
The season starts in February and runs through to November or December. During a season each club plays against other teams twice with one home and one away game.
The winner of the league and the clubs that finish second and third qualify to the AFC Champions League. Two teams that finish bottom at the end of the season face relegation to the China League One. The winner and the runner-up of the League One are promoted to the top tier. According to the league rules, a team can have only five foreign players on the field each game.
Apart from the top professional league, Chinese Super League also organizes competitions between U-19, U-17 and an U-15 teams.
