Egyptian Premier League is a top tier of the professional football in Egypt founded in 1948.
The league title is contested by 18 clubs from August to May. Each club plays 34 matches a season on a home and away basis. The three teams that finish bottom at the end of a season are classed down to the Egyptian Second Division, meanwhile the three winners from the three groups of the second tier receive direct promotion to the top flight.
The Egyptian Premier League has had its regular sponsors since 2005. The giant telecommunications company Vodafone financed the league in between 2005 and 2007, and since 2007 the mobile network operator Etisalat is the funder of the main Egyptian tournament.
The most popular Egyptian clubs are Al Ahly, Zamalek, Ismaily, Al Ittihad Al Sakandary and Ghazl El Mahalla. It’s a tidbit that Al Ahly and Zamalek took part in each of 56 Premier League seasons since the league inception. Al Ahly maintains the leadership as the most titled club amassing 36 league honors. Hassan El-Shazly, the player of Tersana SC, established himself as a legendary Egyptian Premier League striker with a total of 187 goals.
