Football League Championship (also known as Championship) is the second-highest division in English football pyramid after the Premier League. The Championship is one of the oldest tournaments in the world that was founded in 1892. For more than a century it was called Division Two, receiving in 1992 the title Division One and transforming before the season 2004/2005 into Football League Championship. The Championship is the richest non-top division in the world and the sixth wealthiest league in Europe.
The title of the Championship is contested by 24 teams. The season runs from August to May and each team place against the other team twice, one ‘home’ game and one 'away' game, totaling 46 games for a side. The teams are placed in the league table by points received, then goal difference, then the number of goals scored and finally head-to-head results for that season.
The team that finishes atop of the Championship is promoted to the Premier League. The top teams participate in the promotional play-off and the winners also earn a chance to play in the top flight, while the bottom three teams face relegation to Football League One.
Sunderland and Reading claimed the title of the League 2 times, Queens Park Rangers, Newcastle United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion clinched the trophy just once.
