Finnish Veikkausliiga is the top division of Finnish football system. It is named after the Finnish national betting agency Veikkaus and was established in 1990. Since 1930 the league, as it was called Mestaruussarja, was semi-professional.
The second division, Ykkönen, was founded in 1973. Today 12 clubs compete in Veikkausliiga, each team play the others thrice. The top six teams play 17 home matches and the other six teams play 16 home games. The team which is last in the table relegate to Ykkönen and the top team from the second division advance to Veikkausliiga. Due to the cold climate, the season lasts from April till October, so the teams play mostly during the summertime.
The league champion gets a chance to compete in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League and the runner-up and third-placed team go the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.
The most titled club is HJK Helsinki. By the year of 2012 they won 25 championships.
