Ligue 2 is the second highest level of the Ligue de Football Professionnel. It was formed in 1933 and initially was named Division 2. In 2002 it was renamed to Ligue 2. There are 20 competing clubs in it though throughout its history the number of the team has varied because some amateur teams became professional and some clubs merged.
The top three teams earn promotion to Ligue 1 and three lowest teams are relegated to Championnat National, the third division. During a season, which lasts from August to May, every team plays with every other team twice. All in all each of 20 clubs plays 38 matches. If teams have the same amount of points the goal difference are taken into account, if still teams have equal result, teams stay at one position and if promotion or relegation is determined, teams face in play-off game.
