The Georgian Umaglesi Liga is the top division in Georgian football league system. It was founded in 1990, after the dissolution of USSR, and it is guided by Georgian Football Federation. The amount of teams participating in the top division between 1990 and 2011 varied between 10 and 20. Since 2011 there are 12 teams in Umaglesi Liga. The league winner gets a chance to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the runner-up and third placed teams play in the UEFA Europa League.
The last four teams in the table face four top teams from the second division, Pirveli Liga, in play-offs.
The most titled team in Georgian Umaglesi Liga is FC Dinamo Tbilisi. Between 1990 and 1999 they won ten consecutive league titles. In 2010/11 and 2011/12 FC Zestafoni was the league winner.
