Italian Serie A is an Italian football championship – one of the oldest national football competitions in the world. Italian Serie A championship exists since 1929 and is played every year.
Currently 20 top division football clubs take part in it. During the course of the season which lasts from August to May each team plays 38 games: two games with each of the 19 opponents. One game takes place on the home field, the other – on the way field. During the championship clubs are awarded points: a draw is worth one point, a defeat does not bring any points and a victory means all 3 points for a club.
If several teams have equal number of points the winner is decided with the goals scored. The championship being over, the club with the biggest number of points becomes the winner of the Italian Serie A. For the following season the winners have the right to put a patch of the tricolour Italian flag called “scudetto” on their shirts. Three clubs that finished in places 18-20 go down to Serie B championship and, respectively, 3 strongest clubs of Serie В ascend the ladder to play Serie A fixtures.
Serie A most successful club is Juventus which has 27 titles. It is followed by Italian clubs Milan and Internazionale who have 18 championship titles each. Third most successful team is Genoa with nine titles.
Serie A is ranked 3rd according to the UEFA’s league coefficient after English and Spanish national football championships. Serie A enjoys participation of best football players both from Italy and other countries of the world. And Italian championship games are watched by football supporters from all over the world.
