The K League Classic is a South Korean national league that tops the country’s football pyramid. It has now been contested for 30 seasons. Every year over the past three decades the players, head coaches and clubs have created some unforgettable moments and matches that tell the story of a season.
The competition was established as the Korean Super League in 1983. Initially, only five teams challenged the league title. Hallelujah FC were crowned the first ever league champions. In 1998 the Super League adopted the name of the K League Classic. It is currently contested by 14 clubs. The top division is devoid of the relegation and promotion system, though there is the K-League and the Korea National League.
The K League Classic usually kicks off in March or April and runs to November. After all the clubs face one another home and away, the league is split into two competitions. One of them features the top six sides that face off in play-offs to determine the K-League champions. The other mini-league sees the bottom eight clubs jostling among themselves for final standing.
Each win earns three points. One point is awarded in case of a draw. Teams that occupy the first, second and third positions qualify for the AFC Champions League.
FC Seoul is the reigning champion of the K League Classic.
