Ajax Cape Town

History and achievements

Ajax Cape Town is a South African football club, located in Parow, Cape Town. The football club was founded as a result of the merger of Cape Town Spurs and Seven Stars in 1999, supported by AFC Ajax. The first match Ajax Cape Town played on 17 July 1999 against Kaizer Chiefs that was a 1-0 win. They finished their first league on the fourth place. In 2000, Ajax Cape Town won the Rothmans Cup.

From 2002 till 2006 the team was guided by Gordon Igesund and he led them to the second result in 2003/04 league season. In 2006/07 the team’s manager Muhsin Ertuğral brought the team to the South Africa’s premier club football tournament win. In January 2007 Ajax CT overwhelmed their mother club AFC Ajax in a friendly game, beating them 3-1 in Cape Town. The team managed to finish the Premier Soccer League runners-up in 2007/08.

There is an academy in Ajax Cape Town and its graduates such as Thulani Serero, Steven Pienaar, and John Obi Mikel play for European top clubs.

The team plays their home matches at Cape Town Stadium, which had been built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Its capacity is 55,000.

In 2010, the team’s shareholders were Ajax Amsterdam, whom belonged 51% and 49% belonged to the Efstathiou and Comitis families.
