Qatari football club Al Kharaitiyat was founded in 1996 in the region of Doha. With its establishment the club got into the Qatari Second Division and competed there for eight years. The year 2004 came to be a decisive point for the club. First of all, the club got its current name Al Kharaitiyat and the most important thing was that they finally broke into the top tier. However, the team got off on the wrong foot as they fell out of the Qatar Stars League after the poor finish in their debut season. But they fought their way back into the top flight in the 2008/09 season. In 2012, Al Kharaitiyat met with much success as they finished as runners-up in the Qatari Stars Cup losing the final match to Al Wakra.
The team are often nicknamed the Thunders. They play their home matches at Al-Khawr Stadium in Doha that can hold up to 20,000 spectators.
