Al-Sadd is a Qatari football club based in Doha. It was founded by four students in 1969 and got the nickname Al-Zaeem, meaning the Boss in English.
It turned to be that the moniker proved its value. In the 1970s and 1980s the club established themselves as a dominant force in Qatari football. Al-Sadd claimed their first silverware as early as 1972, however the Qatari League was not officially recognized then and in the 1973/74 season the team recorded their first official title. Throughout the two decades, Al-Sadd won 8 Qatar Stars League titles, 6 Emir Cups, 7 Sheikh Jassem Cups. In 1989, the club sparked furor becoming the first Arab side to ever win the AFC Champions League, then called the Asian Club Championship.
In the 2000s, Al-Sadd went on their success. In 2001, they collected the Arab Champions League title. The club’s trophy cabinet welcomed another set of domestic trophies during the period. But the year 2011 brought them true glory: the team made their second AFC Champions League success and became the bronze medalist in the FIFA Club World Cup.
Al-Sadd play their home matches at the 15,000 Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha which is also the home stadium of the Qatar national football team.
