América Futebol Clube, commonly known as América Mineiro, is a Brazilian football club founded in 1912 in Belo Horizonte.
Since the early years of existence América established themselves as a prominent team in the state of Minas Gerais. They proved their strength by winning ten consecutive Campeonato Mineiro titles in between 1916 and 1925. In 1943, the club got into professional leagues of Brazilian football system. Their first run into Campeonato Brasileiro Série A dates back to the 1971 season. América Mineiro regularly competed in the top flight throughout the decade but following poor results in 1979 the team dropped down to the second division. Since then, the club mostly rotated between the third and second tiers with rare appearances in Série A.
América Mineiro players are often nicknamed Coelho which means the Rabbit in English. They play their home games at Estádio Independência which can host up to 23,000 people.
