History and achievements

APOEL F.C. is a football club in Cyprus. It was formed in 1926 and initially was named POEL. The name APOEL was introduced after a table tennis and volleyball departments were formed (A stand for athletic).

Between 1936 and 1940 the team claimed five Championship victories. After the Greek Civil War some team members formed Omonia Nicosia Football Club.

In the first decade of the new millennium APOEL F.C. won four league titles and after the victory in 2011, they made an impressive achievement in European arena. They managed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage and then passed through 1/8 and reached the quarterfinal, where they were eliminated by Real Madrid.

The team’s home ground in Nicosia is GSP Stadium, which has a capacity of 22,959. APOEL F.C. is one of the most successful teams in Cyprus, throughout its history and till 2012 they won 21 Champion titles and 19 Cypriot Cup trophies.
