Clube Atlético Mineiro is a professional football club located in Belo Horizonte, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is regarded as a powerhouse in Brazilian football.
The club was born on March 25, 1908. The first competitive game was on March 21, 1909, a 3-0 thrashing of Sport Club Foot Ball. Atlético Mineiro`s first official state league win arrived seven years later. The club wasn`t to be starved of title success for too long as it won the championship in 1926. During the 1920-1930 period the team was blessed with an irresistible attack of Jairo, Said and Mário de Castro and opposition defenses couldn`t keep them at bay. Each of them found the target more than 100 times. The hitmen totaled 459 goals for the club.
Clube Atlético Mineiro dominated the Brazilian football arena in the 1940s and 1950s as it lifted the state championship title 12 times. In 1956 the club delivered another title and that swiftly became five in a row.
In the 1960s Atlético moved to its new stadium Mineirão but the club failed to climb the football ladder as it lost its leadership to Cruzeiro. It was only by the end of the decade that Atlético had managed to regain its leading positions. In 1970 the team won the championship at their new home. A year later the club sealed its first and solitary Brazilian Championship title.
The 1980s witnessed Atlético lift seven back-to-back titles. During the next decade the team was twice crowned CONMEBOL Cup champions.
