AZAL is an Azerbaijani football team from Baku. It was organized as a futsal club in 1996. The club even represented the country in the 2003/04 UEFA Futsal Cup. In 2004, AZAL was reorganized into a football team and played their first season in the Azerbaijan First Division.
In the 2005/06 season, the club made their first run, though poor, into the Premier League finishing 12th in the table. Under coach Asgar Abdullayev, AZAL enjoyed their best days in the league. They finished as runners-up in the 2007/08 campaign, recording their best finish in the top flight so far. The farthest AZAL progressed to in cup competition were the semi-finals in 2010 and 2011. The team have also featured at the early stages of the UEFA competitions.
AZAL players are often nicknamed the Pilots after their club emblem depicting a plane. They wear blue kits. The team play their home matches at AZAL Arena which can hold up to 3,500 people.
