Esporte Clube Bahia is a Brazilian soccer club that represents the city of Salvador, Bahia. The club competes in the Campeonato Baiano and the Série A.
Bahia was born out of the amalgamation of Associação Atlética da Bahia and Clube Bahiano de Tênis on January 1, 1931. The first recorded game came against the then giants Ypiranga. The team managed to secure a stunning 2-0 win. That year also saw the club clinch the state championship. In 1959 Bahia secured the Taça Brasil. A year later Tricolor became the first Brazilian side to take part in the Copa Libertadores. In 1989 Esporte Clube Bahia won its second Brasileirão title. Bahia has been crowned state league champions on 44 occasions so far.
However, the club`s fortune went downhill in the early 2000s. Bahia was unable to cope with the higher standard and dropped to the Série B and then to the Série C. Despite playing in the lowest division Bahia had the record home attendance. Some 40 000 fans flocked to the Fonte Nova, the club`s home ground, to support their favourites. In 2007 the team ensured promotion to the Série B. After the 2009/2010 season Bahia returned to the elite division.
