Basel (the full name is Fussball Club Basel 1893) is a football club from Switzerland.
The club started with an advertisement that appeared in the national newspaper that invited volunteers and football supporters to meet and create a football club on 15 November 1893. That date became the birth day of the club. One of the first captains of the team was Joan Gamper, who later established the legendary Barcelona. In the early days the club did not enjoy much success and only 40 years after the team appeared Basel clinched their first Swiss Cup. The first league title was claimed in 1953. The most fruitful period though started in the 1960s and the team won seven titles in less than 13 years.
In the 1980s the team went through a difficult spell missing qualification to the European competitions and suffering relegation to the second division in 1987. Basel managed to recapture its lost positions in the 2000s when they claimed the title of the Swiss Super League in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
The home ground of the team is St. Jakob-Park that can sit 38,512 supporters. The nicknames of the club are Bebbi and RotBlau.
