History and achievements
Beira-Mar is a Segunda Liga club from Aveiro. It was founded in 1922 by a group of enthusiasts. Apart from football the club also develops futsal, basketball and boxing. However, football is a priority, so the club management pays great attention to it. Beira-Mar finances allow the team to be competitive among best clubs of the Portuguese championship. Victory in the Portuguese Cup is the best result in the club history. This huge achievement occurred in 1999 when the team was led by António Sousa, a former Beira-Mar player. Thanks to the smoothly organized team functioning the club already made it to the final of the national cup in 1991, but in spite of desperate resistance they lost the deciding game to FC Porto.
Beira-Mar won the second division in 1961, 1965 and 1971. It became champion of Liga de Honra twice – in 2006 and 2010. In 1999 the club played in the UEFA Cup but left the competition after losing to Vitesse.
In 1976 Eusébio – living legend of Portuguese football – left SL Benfica to join Beira-Mar. Unfortunately, he did not have enough support from the crowd in spite of the earlier incredible performances as he only scored 3 goals in 12 matches.
Home arena of the club is called Estádio Municipal and hosts important national championship matches. And every match counts as a special one as, throughout the long history of the club, it never used to be a permanent participant of the best national football championship. Capacity of the stadium is 30,500 seats and its non-official name is ‘The Circus’ which can be ascribed to its colors and design.
In 2006 the club invited Mário Jardel – a two-time winner of the European Golden Shoe. In the 2006/07 season the Brazilian scored a number of important goals for Beira-Mar but, nevertheless, he was forced to leave for Αnorthosis FC from Cyprus.
