History and achievements
Birmingham is a professional football club that represents the city of Birmingham. It was formed in 1875 and at the beginning the club changed several names. Only in 1943 it was reformed as Birmingham City. The home ground of the club since 1906 had been St Andrew's stadium and the fieriest rivalry is Aston Villa, their nearest neighbors. The nickname of the club is Blues which is explained by the color of their kit. Moreover, Birmingham fans call themselves Bluenoses.
The current owner of the club is Carson Yeung and the president is Vico Hee.
The best period in the team's history was the second part of the 20th century when the Blues gained the right to play in the first division after the season 1955/1956. On 15 May 1956 Birmingham became the first club from England that competed in Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and few years later went down in history as the first English club that reached a European final playing in Fairs Cup where they lost 4-1 to Barcelona.
In 1963 League Cup Final Birmingham played against Aston Villa winning the game 3-1 on aggregate and getting their first major trophy.
Recently the club competed against F.C. Liverpool at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium but showed a poor performance and lost 2-0. Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung in July 2007 bought about 30 per cent of shares in the club and promised additional investments in the club infrastructure and development. In 2011 Birmingham celebrated a long-awaited victory in the League Cup outperforming Arsenal 2–1.
After the season 2010-2011 Birmingham was sent to the Championship.
