Blackburn Rovers is an English club formed in 1875. Blackburn is one of the clubs that established the Football League as well as the Premier League. The club’s nicknames are the Rovers, Blue and Whites and the Riversiders. The word ‘rovers’ means ‘wanderers’, ‘tramps’ and is frequently used in the names of different English clubs. The badge of the team is an adopted town’s coat of arms. The home ground of the club since 1890 is Ewood Park.
In the early 1900s the club was regarded as a top-team in England becoming champions of the league in 1912 and 1914, also claiming the FA Cup in 1928. For five years after that victory Blackburn stayed in the mid-table position but slipped away in Division Two in 1936.
In the 1970s and 1980s Blackburn Rovers bounced between Division One and Division Two and it was not until 1991 when Blackburn was bought by a steel tycoon Jack Walker that the team appeared in the Premier League. The year 1995 was the most remarkable for the club as it celebrated the victory in the Premier League. However most of the players left that exceptional squad the following season and the club did not manage to repeat its success once more. Moreover the slump in the club resulted in relegation in 1999.
Beating Tottenham 2-1 in the League Cup final in 2001 Blackburn gained its last major trophy. In the mid-2000s the Rovers stayed in the middle of the table. However, in the season 2011/2012 Blackburn was relegated to the Championship.
