The club was established on 6 September 1890. Before the League of Ireland was set up, the team played in the Irish Premier League and the Irish Cup. Bohemians secured its first league title in 1924. In 1928 the team completed a double by winning both the League of Ireland and the FAI Cup. Bohemians was a powerhouse in the Irish football from 1921 to 1936, winning 5 league titles, 2 FAI Cups and 4 League of Ireland Shields.
Following the club’s major success, Bohemians went into decline for the next 40 years. In the 1970s the club regained its leading positions by winning 2 league titles, 2 FAI Cups and 2 League of Ireland Cups. However, Bohemians experienced another decline, which lasted until the 2000s. During the 2000s the team won the double twice, in 2001 and 2008.
In 1970 the club performed in Europe for the first ever time. In August 2000 Bohemians dumped Aberdeen out of the UEFA Cup by beating the Scottish team in the qualifying round. The Irish side advanced to the next round, where Bohemians lost to Kaiserslautern.
