History and achievements
Bolton Wanderers was established in 1874. In 1888 the club joined 11 other teams to form the Football League. In the matches of the English cup 1887/1888 season Bolton competed against Everton. The Wanderers won these games, but in the next leg lost 9–1 to Preston North End.
In 1894 Bolton found its way to the English Cup final, however lost 4–1 to Nott’s County. A few years later the team was runners-up a second time. In the match the team was defeated 1–0 by a strong Manchester City side. But in 1923 the club finally celebrated a victory in their third attempt to get the trophy overcoming West Ham 2–0.
The year 1987 was one of the most disappointing in the Bolton’s history. The team spent a season in Division Four. However in 1995 under the management of Rioch Bolton regained its top-status securing their place in the Championship.
1996/1997 season turned to be an immense success for the club. In total the club scored more than 100 goals, gaining 98 points, although remained in the Championship. In 2000–01 Bolton came back to the Premier League after outperforming Preston North End in the play-off final.
During the following 5 years Bolton transformed into a stable squad. The main influence was a new head coach Sam Allardyce who built the team that combined experienced and young players.
In 2004 Bolton achieved the League Cup final, but was defeated by Middleborough. The club finished eighth in the Premiership which is the highest finish in their history. This achievement earned Bolton UEFA Cup qualification.The nicknames of the team are the Trotters, the Wanderers or the White Men. The last two are defined by white color of their home jerseys.
