Carlisle United is a professional football club from the city of Carlisle, Cumbria. Carlisle is the smallest city by population to host a top division English football team.
The team was founded in 1904.
Carlisle United were crowned champions of the North Eastern League in 1922.
The most fruitful period in the club’s history dates back to the late 1960s and early 1970s when the side cemented a strong mid-table in Second Division, finishing in the top half for seven seasons including the third place in the season 1966/1967, the fourth spot in 1970/1971 and the third place in 1973/1974 that gave them promotion to the top flight.
In the season 1971/1971 Carlisle competed in the European competition for the first time in their history and even defeated A.S. Roma 3–2 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
The club’s nicknames are the Cumbrians and the Blues.The major rivals of the side are Middlesbrough and Hartlepool United.
The side hosts home games at the Brunton Park that can sit up to 18,202.
