Cesena

AC Cesena is an Italian football club founded in 1940 in Cesena.

The team began their way in the lower leagues of Italian football. In 1968, they won promotion to Serie B and in 1973 Cesena made their first run into the top flight making a good 11th place finish in their debut season. The club continued their success sparking furor with the 6th place finish in the 1975/76 Serie A season, their best achievement to date. Thanks to this result, Cesena won a ticket to the UEFA Cup, though their play on European arena didn’t last for long. However, in the next campaign the team’s fortunes changed as they finished bottom of the table and slipped to Serie B again.

Since 1977 till 2000, the team mostly competed in the second division except for six seasons in the top flight. At the beginning of the 2000s the club went into decline playing in Serie C1 for four seasons. After that Cesena recuperated their lost positions and gradually bounced back to the top league. However, in the 2011/12 season the team sank to the bottom of Serie A standings and dropped down to the second division. In 2014they returned to the top flight.

Such notable players as Luis Jiménez, Massimo Agostini, Massimo Ambrosini, Alessandro Bianchi, Alberto Fontana, Emanuele Giaccherini, Sebastiano Rossi and others had their spells at Cesena.

Cesena’s players are often nicknamed the Seahorses and that fish is depicted on their logo. The team play their home matches at Stadio Dino Manuzzi which can hold up to 23,900 spectators.
