History and achievements
PFC CSKA Sofia is a football club from Bulgaria, Sofia. It was founded in 1948 and was tied to Central Sports Club of the Army. The club, named CDV (Central House of the Troops) merged with Septemvri Sofia on 5 May 1948 and that date is the team’s official birthday. Their first season tuned out a success as the newly formed team became the league winner.
In 1950s the team missed only one championship title, being crowned every season. Throughout two decades their name was changed several times. In 1960s they claimed four league titles and in 1970/71 they made it to the Round of 16 of the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Five domestic leagues they won during the 1970s and in 1973/74 CSKA reached the quarterfinal of UEFA European Cup. The following decade they won six championships, in 1989 they advanced to the semifinals of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.
In 1990s the situation changed, they won the league in 1990 and 1992, but then had an ineffective period because of insufficient financing, many managers changed. In 1995 CSKA had strong young footballers and Georgi Vasilev was appointed the head coach. The team won the 1996/97 campaign and competed in the second qualifying round of the Champions League.
In the first decade of the new millennium CSKA was the league title holder in 2002/03, 2004/05, 2007/08. In 2005/06, 2009/10 and 2010/11 they competed at the group stage of the Europa League.
