Deportivo Toluca is a football club in Mexico. The team was founded by Román and Gerardo Ferrat and Filiberto Navas. In 1950 the team joined Segunda División, which had been founded recently and in 1953 they promoted to Mexican Primera División.
Deportivo Toluca won two consecutive Mexican Primera División titles in 1967 and 1968. The following league title they won in 1975. At that time the team was guided by the Uruguayan manager Ricardo de León, but they faced criticism for their ultra-defensive style of play.
From the summer of 1997 till the autumn of 2000 Enrique Meza was the team’s manager and his offensive techniques helped the side to win Verano 1998, Verano 1999 and Verano 2000. During all four tournaments the Paraguayan player José Saturnino Cardozo was the team’s top-scorer. Deportivo Toluca won Apertura 2002 and that was their seventh title. In 2005 they won Apertura, they had a poor result in the 2007 Clausura, but improved in the Apertura 2007. The following success was in 2010, when they won Bicentenario.
In 1955/56 and 1988/89 Toluca won Copa México. In 1968 and 2003 they were CONCACAF Champions’ Cup winners.
The team is nicknamed Los Choriceros, Los Escarlatas or Diablos Rojos. Their home venue is Nemesio Díez Riega. It is located in Toluca, State of Mexico, and has a capacity of 27,000.
