History and achievements
SG Dynamo Dresden is a German club founded as SG Deutsche Volkspolizei Dresden in 1950. In 1953, the club affiliated with the East German police and got a new name SG Dynamo Dresden.
In their early years the side competed in the German top flight DDR-Oberliga. The team got off to a flying start as they won the domestic cup in their second playing season and became the German League champions in the 1952/53 campaign.
Dynamo Dresden enjoyed a meteoric rise in the 1970s as they firmly entrenched in the German top-flight division with Walter Fritzsch at the helm. During that period they won five league honours and two domestic cups establishing themselves as the most popular clubs in East Germany. The team also announced themselves to European football taking part in European championships annually.
The 1990s saw German reunification that touched upon football as well. The premier football league was renamed in Bundesliga. After the Berlin Wall had fallen, the East German players got the opportunity to move to west clubs. Thus, key Dynamo players Ulf Kirsten and Matthias Sammer left the club for VfB Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen respectively in 1990 depriving the Dresden side of their major force. Since 1991 till 1995, Dynamo competed in the first division within a hairbreadth of relegation. The club eventually lost ground in 1995 and since that time rotates between the second and fourth tiers.
The side earned promotion to the 2. Fußball-Bundesliga for the 2011/12 season.
The home ground of Dynamo Dresden is the Glücksgas Stadium with the capacity of 32,066 people.
